(Or, What Happens When a Somatic Researcher Realizes Every Relationship Book on the Shelf Assumes You're Safe)

This book has your nervous system at 2 AM, lying next to someone you love, running calculations your conscious mind refuses to do. The conversation you've rehearsed forty times that somehow gets worse every time you actually have it. The moment you realize you've read seven relationship books and none of them accounted for the possibility that your partner might not be participating.

Bonded Systems Under Load is available now on Kindle. Paperback is coming soon.

What Makes This Different From Every Other Relationship Book

Here is the honest version.

Most relationship books start from two assumptions: both people want repair, and the relationship is fundamentally safe. From those two assumptions, they build an entire architecture of advice — communicate better, be more vulnerable, try the love languages, schedule date nights, learn to fight fair.

When those conditions are present, that advice works beautifully. This book was not written for those conditions.

This book was written for the place where you've already tried. Where you've read the books, done the therapy, adjusted your approach, extended more patience, used better language — and things are somehow worse, or the same, or you're less certain than when you started.

Bonded Systems Under Load treats relationships the way a structural engineer treats a building under stress. Not as a moral question. Not as a communication problem. As a system with load limits, stress points, and predictable failure modes. Because when your nervous system is tracking your partner's breathing patterns in the dark and running threat calculations you didn't authorize, "communicate better" is not a solution. It's a category error.

Here is what this book actually does:

It maps six distinct relationship states — from cooperative to coercive — because the tools that save one state will destroy you in another. It introduces the MVSR Gate, a safety-first decision framework that tells you which tools are safe for your actual conditions before you use them. It provides one-body stabilization protocols — tools you can use alone, without your partner's participation, without their permission, without their awareness — because sometimes that's all you have.

It covers territory no other relationship book touches: deployment and reintegration, first responders, shift work, new parenthood, caregiving, financial dependency, faith-based partnerships, neurodivergent partnerships. Not as afterthoughts. As full chapters, because the people in those situations have been getting generic advice that doesn't account for their actual structural conditions.

Every chapter ends with a Load Audit — four plain questions that give you one concrete thing to carry forward, even if you're too exhausted to do anything else.

And it asks one question that runs through every page: Over time, does your internal load go down, and does your reality become more stable?

That's the compass. It doesn't require your partner's agreement. It doesn't require a therapist's validation. It only requires you to track what is actually happening.

Why This Exists

I got tired of watching good people blame themselves for systems that were never designed to support them. Most relationship advice moralizes. It tells you what you should feel, what you should want, how you should show up. That approach assumes the foundation is solid and just needs better furniture.

But when one person is refusing, retaliating, or controlling — "be more vulnerable" isn't bridge-building. It's handing over ammunition. And nobody warns you about that, because the books assume you're safe.

This book doesn't assume you're safe. It checks first.

This book will not ask you to try harder. It will help you see clearly what kind of system you are actually in — and from that clarity, choose the move that actually fits.

You weren't doing it wrong. The tools didn't match the conditions.

Now they do.
